Charitable Work

Darrick Wood School we are proud of our record of money raised for charity. Each form and tutor group in the school have Charity Representatives who spearhead the efforts of their group to raise money for charity and the School Council plays an active part in considering which charitable causes to promote. This is part of encouraging ownership and developing responsibility, two of the pillars of our Vision for Learning.

There are charities which we support on a regular basis and others which are supported in response to particular circumstances. We are always looking for new and exciting opportunities to support charitable causes so please contact the School Office and our Charity Co-ordinator will be in touch.

For many years Darrick Wood School has raised funds for our namesake in Nepal. Darrick Wood School Nepal is located in Pokhara in the centre of the country. We are currently working with Orpington Rotary Club, trying to raise money for them to build a farm. The farm will allow them to raise money to fund new projects for the School. This is a poor farming community area, where many children would be taken out of school and put to work with no education. This is a long-term commitment by our School. A range of events are held during the course of the year to raise money for Darrick Wood School Nepal, with Year 7 in particular raising a great deal arising out of a unit in their Learning to Learn lessons in the summer term. This year we have used the proceeds from an Own Clothes Day in July. If you would like to donate towards our sister school in Nepal, please do contact us.

The other charitable causes which we support include a range of local and national charities. In the school year 2016/17 charities supported by our School have included Little Hearts Matter, Eveline Children’s Unit, Macmillan, Breast Cancer Awareness, Cancer Research, the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, the British Heart Foundation, the Saxon Day Care centre in Orpington, Demelza, the Maypole Project, Save the Children Christmas Jumpers, Make a Wish, Children in Need and Comic Relief.

In the Spring Term of 2017 the School organised the annual Martin Luther King Week of Service. The main focus of this was a collection for the Orpington Food Bank. This is the third year we have participated and the response was the best so far with over 30 boxes being sent to the food bank.
